Five students per class

Details and deposit information found towards the bottom of this page

*Note for 2025; classes with woven seats will use flat reed. It’s become increasing difficult for me to obtain hickory bark in the quantities needed for classes. Students can bring and substitute bark for if they obtain it.

Grand Rocker

June 22-28, 2025

$1,800

In this 7-day class we’ll make a green wood rocking chair. The parts are taken from the log, except for the rocker blades and arms (we’ll want those dry before assembly). We’ll shape parts, steam bend, and put the chair together before weaving in the flat reed. Students have the opportunity to change the slats to their liking. Final finishing done at home.

This is a more advanced piece. Ideally, students have made a chair before or have woodworking experience. Please contact me with any questions.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Low-Back Windsor Chair

August 25-29, 2025

$1,500

Over five days, students will build a low-back Windor chair similar to the one shown here. Students can choose between traditional or contemporary turnings for their chair (I’ll prepare the turnings and materials before class).

We’ll sculpt the seat, fit the legs and stretchers, before adding the upper carriage to our chairs. The plan is for the chair to be together, ready for travel, at the end of class (unless you want to flat pack it for easy airline transport).

No prior chairmaking experience necessary, though familiarity with woodworking tools and materials is helpful.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Stick Chair

July 14-19, 2025

$1,650

In this 6-day class we’ll make an arm chair from the Welsh stick chair tradition. Using a combination of kiln dried and green wood, our class will shape and create the parts for the chair before assembling our chairs near the end of class.

It is my intention that students can either follow my lead and make the chair I build during the week, or change the dimensions and details to fashion an arm chair of their own design. The image shown is the style of chair we’ll make during the week.

Open to all skill levels. Familiarity with tools is helpful, though all will find succuss in this course.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Lounge Chair

September 15-20, 2025

$1,750

Over six days, we’ll build and weave in the back and seat on a green wood lounge chair. Working with fresh red oak, we’ll shave our parts and steam bend the curves. The arms are made of kiln dried material to keep from changing dimensions after assembly. Our goal will be to build the chair in five days, with the sixth day spent weaving in the flat reed (Hickory bark is a great option here as well. Students can bring their own if they’d like to weave in hickory bark).

Open to all skill levels. There’s a challenge here, with significant bends and the shapely arms. We’ll have a full six days to get this one made. Final sanding and prep to be completed at home.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Private Instruction

Inquire for details

Private instruction is possible - either individual one-on-one instruction around a skill or project, OR a group of friends looking for a week-long chairmaking class together.

If interested, please send a message to discuss details and possibilities.

Fanback Windsor Chair

October 13-17, 2025

$1,500

In this 5-day class, students will shape and build a fanback side chair that looks great at the side of the room or tucked up to the table.

We’ll shape and bend the crest, make the spindles and tuck them into the kiln, and carve a shovel-shaped seat. We’ll assemble the chair on our last day, and students will take it home to sand and paint.

Pine seat. Red oak for the rest. No turning in this class. The legs and stretchers will all be turned ahead of time.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Lodging

  • There are an abundance of options in the area and I suggest making a reservation early, as the Midcoast region is a gorgeous place that attracts scores of visitors each year (mostly during the summer months). The workshop is located on a quiet, rural road roughly halfway between the towns of Rockland and Damariscotta.

Area:

  • Midcoast Maine is beautiful, with the granite coastline, rugged terrain, and stone fences and rolling homesteads. The landscape draws people from around the world.

  • There’s plenty to do as well. The area is steeped in traditional craft, with furniture makers, tool makers, timber framers, boat builders, and working artists found throughout the region. Galleries showcase the work.

The midcoast holds a couple of furniture making schools; The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and the Maine Coast Craft School.

The shop’s located just 2 miles from Lie Nielsen Toolworks, and about 30 minutes from Liberty Tools (the renowned used hand tools spot that draws craftspeople from all of New England).

  • Beyond art and craft galleries in the ares, there are great dining options. From seafood shacks to James Beard Award winning restaurants, the area has options for everyone. There’s far more than seafood……
