#207 Chair

May 20-25, 2024

$1,425

3/4 spots filled

We’ll build a contemporary green wood low back chair with a hickory seat in this 6-day class. Students will split pieces from a log, shape the parts on the shave horse, bend our back posts and slats, add the carved leg details, and completely assemble the frame before weaving in the bark seat on the final day. Final finishing to be done at home, once the chair and seat have time to dry.

Open to all skill levels. The slender parts, along with rake and splay, make for a fun and challenging build.

Students need to bring a small tool kit.

Design & Build a Green Wood Ladderback Chair

June 23-29, 2024

$1,650

2/4 spots filled

Over seven days, we will discuss the principles of ladderback chairmaking and make a chair of your design. The focus is on making your chair (come with an idea or create one during the first day of class). From there, we’ll make forms, make the parts, and create the bends. We’ll have dry rungs and pre-bent slats ready.

I plan to connect with students before the class to discuss the chair idea (contemporary, traditional, turned, rocker, etc.). I’ll have materials ready based on our conversation.

Ideally students have made a chair before the class. Students will achieve more during the week with familiarity in the chairmaking process and can give more time to design and ideas. Contact me w/ questions.

Stick Chair

May 6-11, 2024

$1,500

3/4 spots filled

In this 6-day class we’ll make an arm chair from the Welsh stick chair tradition. Using a combination of kiln dried and green wood, our class will shape and create the parts for the chair before assembling our chairs near the end of class.

It is my intention that students can either follow my lead and make the chair I build during the week, or change the dimensions and details to fashion an arm chair of their own design. The image shown is the style of chair we’ll make during the week.

Open to all skill levels. Familiarity with tools is helpful, though all will find succuss in this course.

Grand Rocker

July 7-13, 2024

$1,630

4 of 4 spots filled; join waitlist

In this 7 day class we’ll make a green wood rocking chair. The parts are taken from the log, except for the rocker blades and arms (we’ll want those dry before assembly). We’ll shape parts, steam bend, and put the chair together before weaving in the hickory seat. Students have the opportunity to change the slats to their liking. Final finishing done at home.

This is a more advanced piece. Ideally, students have made a chair before or have woodworking experience. Please contact me with any questions.

Nesting Wooden Carriers

July 26-28, 2024

$625

3 of 4 spots filled

Over three days, we’ll construct a set of nesting cherry carriers, including layout for compound angle dovetails (pins first), then go about making the carriers. We’ll steam bend and carve the handles. The bottoms are attached with nails.

Handwork times vary from student to student. I expect some final detailing will be completed after the class.

Lounge Chair

September 23-28, 2024

$1,590

4 of 4 spots filled

Over six days, we’ll build and weave in the back and seat on a green wood lounge chair. Working with fresh red oak, we’ll shave our parts and steam bend the curves. The arms are made of kiln dried material to keep from changing dimensions after assembly. Our goal will be to build the chair in five days, with the sixth day spent weaving in the hickory bark (or a different material, should you desire and bring another choice for the weaving).

Open to all skill levels. There’s a challenge here, with significant bends and the shapely arms. We’ll have a full six days to get this one made. Final sanding and prep to be completed at home.

Lodging

  • There are an abundance of options in the area and I suggest making a reservation early, as the Midcoast region is a gorgeous place that attracts scores of visitors each year (mostly during the summer months). The workshop is located on a quiet, rural road roughly halfway between the towns of Rockland and Damariscotta.

Area:

  • Midcoast Maine is beautiful, with the granite coastline, rugged terrain, and stone fences and rolling homesteads. The landscape draws people from around the world.

  • There’s plenty to do as well. The area is steeped in traditional craft, with furniture makers, tool makers, timber framers, boat builders, and working artists found throughout the region. Galleries showcase the work.

The midcoast holds a couple of furniture making schools; The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and the Maine Coast Craft School.

The shop’s located just 2 miles from Lie Nielsen Toolworks, and about 30 minutes from Liberty Tools (the renowned used hand tools spot that draws craftspeople from all of New England).

  • Beyond art and craft galleries in the ares, there are great dining options. From seafood shacks to James Beard Award winning restaurants, the area has options for everyone. There’s far more than seafood……
